Invoice, estimate, quote or receipt?
| Document | When you send it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Estimate | Before the work | An approximate price; it can change. |
| Quote | Before the work | A fixed price, valid for a stated time. |
| Invoice | After the work (or a milestone) | A request for payment with a due date. |
| Receipt | After payment | Confirmation that the invoice was paid. |
If you send more than a few invoices a month, an app that remembers clients, items and tax rates, numbers the invoices for you and shows what is paid, unpaid and overdue saves real time. That is what Smart Invoice & Estimate Maker does on iPhone — including a payment QR code on every invoice.
